James Gunn Explains Production Delays for Amanda Waller Series
DC Studios has not yet abandoned the project entirely.
James Gunn has explained why the series Waller starring Viola Davis has not yet entered production. Speaking on the official podcast The Suicide Squad: Is It Canon?, the co-head of DC Studios admitted that the studio has not been able to achieve the desired result:
“We were actively developing the Waller series, but we never gave it a green light because it simply didn’t reach the level we were aiming for. That doesn’t mean its development is completely stopped.”
Waller was announced among the first projects in the new DC cinematic universe. The series was intended to continue the events of Peacemaker and show the consequences of Amanda’s daughter, Leota Adebayo, exposing her covert operations. However, work on the project has dragged on, and in August 2026, TheWrap reported that it is no longer a priority for DC Studios.
Regardless of the show’s fate, Gunn does not intend to give up on the character herself and already knows how to continue her story if Viola Davis wants to return to the role:
“I have plans for Waller if Viola wants to continue. We know what is happening with her.”
