One of the standout selling points of the PlayStation 5 Pro—currently retailing at $899.99—is PlayStation Spectral Super Resolution (PSSR). According to Sony, this proprietary technology analyzes imagery on a pixel-by-pixel basis, leveraging advanced artificial intelligence upscaling to deliver significantly crisper and more stable gameplay. Now, PlayStation is bridging the gap by bringing a version of this exclusive feature to the standard PS5 hardware family.
Announced today, Quick Spectral Super Resolution (QSSR) arrives as a brand-new performance tier for AI-driven upscaling. Rolling out today, it makes its debut alongside major titles like Marvel’s Wolverine and Ghost of Yōtei. Sony explains that QSSR stems from Project Amethyst, a collaborative AI graphics initiative developed alongside AMD. By utilizing a streamlined neural network architecture paired with meticulously hand-tuned implementation, the feature maximizes the base PS5’s hardware capabilities. While Sony maintains that PSSR on the PS5 Pro remains the ultimate gold standard, QSSR introduces noticeable enhancements to overall visual clarity and stability on standard consoles.
To demonstrate the technology in action, PlayStation has released two comparison videos—one dedicated to Marvel’s Wolverine and another for Ghost of Yōtei. While the visual upgrades are somewhat subtle, you can evaluate the results yourself:
Sony has confirmed plans to distribute QSSR widely among third-party and first-party developers alike. At present, it remains to be seen which previously launched titles or upcoming projects will choose to integrate the technology.
