One of Magic’s Most Infamous Cards Is Finally Unbanned in Modern

Fifteen years after Magic: The Gathering introduced the Modern format, the legendary artifact Umezawa’s Jitte has finally been granted legal status. Originally cemented on the inaugural ban list, this powerful equipment has remained sidelined until today’s pivotal Banned and Restricted Announcement, which promises to reshape the landscape of one of the game’s most beloved formats.

Anyone who has stared down a creature wielding Umezawa’s Jitte understands why it was sequestered for so long. Its ability to generate counters through combat damage transforms even the most modest creature into an unstoppable engine of destruction, often snowballing until the game is effectively over. However, the Modern format has evolved significantly since its inception, and in the current climate, many cards currently in play carry even more explosive potential than the Jitte.

Carmen Klomparens, a senior game designer on the Magic Play Design team, explained that the unbanning is part of a deliberate effort to empower aggressive, creature-centric strategies and breathe new life into archetypes built around Stoneforge Mystic. The update introduces a massive shake-up: alongside Jitte, Violent Outburst—a staple for Living End decks—has been removed from the ban list. Furthermore, the format’s top-tier contenders, Boros Energy and Amulet Titan, were dealt significant blows via the bans of Phlage, Titan of Fire’s Fury and Lotus Field, respectively. Expect a markedly different Modern metagame in the weeks to come.
