Obsidian Adds Third-Person View to The Outer Worlds 2 Following Fan Requests

When The Outer Worlds launched in 2019, many fans of Fallout and The Elder Scrolls were left disappointed by the lack of a third-person perspective. For games of this kind, that view is often expected—especially since Obsidian Entertainment previously developed Fallout: New Vegas, which included it.

But the situation has changed. The Outer Worlds 2, due to release at the end of the month, will offer two distinct third-person camera options, despite that not being part of the initial plan.

Game director Brandon Adler explained the team hadn’t intended this early in development. He said the idea only emerged about two years ago while the developers were compiling a list of potential features.

“We realized some features were too resource-intensive and set them aside. But roughly halfway through development we decided: players want this. That’s when we evaluated how hard it would be to implement.”

In the end, Obsidian partnered with the Disruptive team to weave a third-person camera into the game’s mechanics and animations. The system was tuned to handle environmental interaction, field of view, and the character’s physics.
