Crowdfunding Campaign for Origins of Light: A Final Fantasy Board Game Set to Launch in October
A crowdfunding campaign for Origins of Light: A Final Fantasy Board Game is scheduled to launch on Kickstarter on October 20, 2026, allowing backers to pre-order a tabletop experience inspired by Final Fantasy I, II, and III.
The details were revealed following an interview between TechRaptor and publisher Kess Entertainment, the gaming division of Kess Co.

Players move across a game board based on the world maps of the first three Final Fantasy titles, fighting monsters, defeating bosses, and visiting towns.
In towns, players can spend money to heal, buy weapons and items, and acquire magic-related goods. Origins of Light: A Final Fantasy Board Game supports two to four players and also includes rules for a solo mode.
At the start of the adventure, each participant selects a party of four characters. Every character features unique stats, abilities, gear restrictions, and magic limitations. As players progress and level up their characters, they gain the ability to change their heroes’ jobs.

Setup and gameplay vary depending on the specific Final Fantasy version participants choose to play. Final Fantasy I offers the most straightforward experience. Six character professions are available: Warrior, Monk, Thief, Black Mage, White Mage, and Red Mage. This campaign provides the simplest ruleset in Origins of Light.
Final Fantasy II offers nine named characters from the original game, allowing players to assemble a party featuring Firion, Guy, Leon, and Ricard. The Final Fantasy II world alters the standard gameplay formula by introducing empty spaces on the board that are filled with random tokens, creating a roguelike experience. Whether adventurers encounter regular monsters, discover treasure, or stumble upon a boss is determined entirely by chance.
Final Fantasy III changes the formula again by introducing drafting mechanics. The number of available characters expands to 24 options based on different jobs from the game. This mode unlocks more complex professions, such as Dark Knight, Bard, and Geomancer.

In addition to the three campaigns, an extra map will be available on the reverse side of the Final Fantasy II world map. It allows characters from Final Fantasy I and Final Fantasy II to play in their own roguelike mode, meaning players can use any preferred characters in a quick-play format.
All character artwork, maps, item cards, summon illustrations, monsters, and bosses use official sprites provided by Square Enix. Although the in-game town does not copy any specific location from the original games, it was designed by Square Enix artists specifically for Origins of Light: A Final Fantasy Board Game.
If the Kickstarter crowdfunding campaign succeeds, backers will receive the game in May or June 2027.
