First Details Emerge for New Sci-Fi Movie From Resident Evil Director
Zach Cregger is already working on a new film.
The next project from director Zach Cregger will be the sci-fi thriller Weapons, set on a remote space station. World of Reel journalist Jordan Ruimi claims to have read the script and describes the film as a cross between Alien and 2001: A Space Odyssey.
According to Ruimi, the main character is a female space station captain. Alongside her crew, she sets out to trace the source of a signal originating from a distant planet, leading them to discover an alien artifact capable of distorting time, reality, and human consciousness. The plot will feature time jumps and character doppelgängers, while the story will revisit previously shown events and reveal them from a fresh perspective.

These details are not officially confirmed, but Cregger himself previously acknowledged that Weapons shares certain similarities with Stanley Kubrick’s 2001: A Space Odyssey:
“I am not comparing Weapons to A Space Odyssey, which I consider an absolute masterpiece in every sense. But there is an undeniable strangeness to that film, and it is also a horror movie. To me, A Space Odyssey is a terrifying horror film about human nature and, of course, artificial intelligence. It asks serious questions, and in that regard, it has some similarities to Weapons.”
Cregger also hinted at the unusual structure of the film, which partially supports Ruimi’s information:
“The story unfolds in a very specific way that I am very proud of. It is unsettling, though it is not a horror movie—it simply features horror sequences. The project scares me with its scale. I still don’t fully understand how to shoot it, but I think that is a good sign.”

Weapons is being produced by New Line Cinema and Steven Spielberg’s Amblin Entertainment. Cregger wrote the screenplay himself and will direct the film, while Spielberg will serve as a producer. The cast and production start dates have not yet been announced. Weapons is scheduled to premiere on August 11, 2028.
