Nintendo Reportedly Planning “Hardware Lottery” for Switch 2: Rumors Emerge of New LCD Model

Nintendo has released no official information on this matter.

Signs of a hardware revision for the Nintendo Switch 2 have emerged online a year after the console’s launch. Sources report that a new LCD panel appeared on a Chinese component resale site. This part may replace the display used in the original version of the device.

While the Nintendo Switch 2 remains the only handheld with NVIDIA DLSS support, users have criticized its LCD screen. A noticeable ghosting effect—caused by slow panel response times—remains the primary issue. Reports indicate the Switch 2 display responds about 50% slower than the original Nintendo Switch screen.

The account Nintendo Patents Watch on Bluesky identified the potential new panel. According to the author, the display—presumably manufactured by Sharp—differs from the current Innolux panel. The changes to the open-circuit design, connectors, and ribbon cables suggest a major hardware overhaul rather than a minor tweak.

It remains unclear what specific improvements the new panel offers. The situation is complicated because the current Innolux display already uses LTPS glass produced by Sharp. However, the design changes suggest the new version will likely offer better performance.

Nintendo previously addressed HDR support issues through firmware updates. Reducing ghosting, which cannot be fixed with software, remains the most likely goal for this hardware change.

The company has not clarified its plans for an updated console. Nintendo could replace the current model entirely or sell both versions at the same time. The latter option risks a hardware lottery where customers do not know which display version they will receive.
