Peter Claffey as Dunk in A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms

An early image from A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms offered a first look at HBO’s smaller-scale return to Westeros. The six-episode first season has now aired in full, and HBO has renewed the series for Season 2.

Story and place in the timeline

Set about a century before Game of Thrones, the series follows young hedge knight Ser Duncan the Tall, known as Dunk, and his small, sharp-witted squire Egg. Their journey begins around the tournament at Ashford Meadow, where Dunk tries to establish himself as a knight. Season 1 adapts George R. R. Martin’s first Dunk and Egg novella, The Hedge Knight.

Episodes and where to watch

Season 1 consists of six episodes. It premiered on HBO and HBO Max on January 18, 2026, and completed its run in February. The full first season is now available on HBO Max, subject to regional catalog availability.

Cast and creators

Peter Claffey plays Dunk and Dexter Sol Ansell plays Egg. The supporting cast includes Finn Bennett as Aerion Targaryen, Bertie Carvel as Baelor Targaryen, Tanzyn Crawford as Tanselle, Daniel Ings as Lyonel Baratheon and Sam Spruell as Maekar Targaryen.

Ira Parker serves as showrunner and co-created the adaptation with George R. R. Martin. The series deliberately focuses on two travelers and one tournament rather than the continent-wide conflicts of the earlier HBO dramas.

Season 2 status

HBO announced the renewal in November 2025, before the first-season premiere. A release date for Season 2 has not been announced as of August 2026, so unofficial calendar dates should be treated as estimates.
