At a press event on November 20, the network confirmed it has already renewed A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms ahead of the show’s premiere, scheduled for January 18, 2026. The series — a screen adaptation of George R. R. Martin’s Dunk and Egg novellas — follows the earnest Ser Duncan “Dunk” (Peter Claffey) and his squire Egg (Dexter Sol Ansell), a youth harboring a consequential secret. Unlike other entries in the franchise, episodes of A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms will be half-hour in length. A second season is slated to arrive in 2027.
House of the Dragon also secured an early renewal prior to its return in summer 2026. Showrunner Ryan Condal has signaled that season three will be enormous in scope as it plunges into the Targaryen civil war that was seeded at the close of season two. Expect the conflict to escalate dramatically — including a showdown in King’s Landing involving Rhaenyra and her dragonriders against Aemond and his forces. The franchise’s timeline schedules the fourth season of House of the Dragon to premiere in 2028.

Francesca Orsi, HBO’s EVP and head of drama series and films, said the renewals will let the network sustain multiple seasons of both shows over the next three years and showcase the breadth of Martin’s richly imagined world.
George R. R. Martin has expressed mixed feelings about some adaptations of his work — at one point posting (and later removing) a blog criticizing deviations from his source material and the potential ripple effects of cutting a character. Still, he reportedly praised A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms after screening the first season’s episodes.
