New Details Emerge for Star Wars: Starfighter Starring Ryan Gosling
Shawn Levy has shared new character and setting details for his upcoming film Star Wars: Starfighter, which takes place five years after the conclusion of the Skywalker saga.
Levy revealed that Ryan Gosling’s protagonist, Cade Oberon, comes from an underprivileged working-class background and relies entirely on himself to get by. According to the director, he and Gosling drew inspiration during character development from S.E. Hinton’s novel The Outsiders and its film adaptation directed by Francis Ford Coppola.
“Gosling and I, oddly enough, bonded early on in the script phase over the movie The Outsiders. We talked about how that movie captured the essence of characters who don’t belong to privileged circles. They’re from the wrong side of the tracks. Our characters in Starfighter are from the wrong side of the galaxy.”
The filmmaker also provided a deeper look at Cade’s personality and journey:
“Ryan’s character, Cade, comes from a rough part of the galaxy, wasn’t born with a silver spoon in his mouth, is a bit scrappy, a bit working-class, has no privileges, and embarks on an adventure that crosses his path with the fastest starfighter ever built.”

The narrative of Star Wars: Starfighter unfolds five years after the events of Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker. Levy explained that former power structures have collapsed, turning the galaxy into a lawless frontier where people must fend for themselves:
“This implies the fact that — this is a moment in the galaxy when there is no government, overseer, or order. Everyone is just trying to survive. Everyone has to do what is necessary to survive.”
Alongside Gosling, the cast features Flynn Gray, Amy Adams, Matt Smith, Mia Goth, and Aaron Pierre. Jonathan Tropper, who previously collaborated with Levy on Free Guy and The Adam Project, penned the screenplay.
Star Wars: Starfighter is scheduled to premiere in theaters on May 28, 2027.
