Neve Campbell has confirmed that she will return as Sidney Prescott, now Sidney Evans, in Scream 8.

“Scream 8, that’s in the pipeline as well,” Campbell told AP. “You know I can’t tell you anything about Scream 8,” she said, “I’ll be in it.” Campbell has appeared in every film in the series except 2023’s Scream 6.

On March 31, 2026, Paramount and Spyglass announced plans to develop an eighth film, with sisters Lilla and Nora Zuckerman writing the script. The television writers have worked together on series including Poker Face, Suits, Fringe and Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.

Earlier in 2026, Scream 7 became the highest-grossing film in the series, bringing in $214 million against a $45 million budget. Series creator Kevin Williamson directed and co-wrote the film.

Despite its box office performance, the film drew largely negative reviews. Critics called it shallow and the franchise’s worst entry. Its 29% Rotten Tomatoes score put it last in the series, behind Scream 3, the only other installment with a negative score on the review aggregator.

The film also drew controversy after songwriter, activist and actor Melissa Barrera was fired from Scream 7 for criticizing the Israeli government for committing genocide and ethnic cleansing in Gaza. In response to her firing, the Boycott, Divestment and Sanctions movement, Film Workers for Palestine, CodePink, the Democratic Socialists of America and others called for a boycott of the movie.

The Scream franchise

The first Scream film was released in 1996 and became known for its self-aware, metatextual approach to slasher clichés. It brought in $173 million on a budget of $14 million to $15 million, making it the highest-grossing entry in the series when adjusted for inflation.

After an initial trilogy that ran through 2000, the series returned in 2011 with Scream 4. Another decade-long break followed before Scream returned in 2022 to a positive reception. Many of the same creatives handled 2023’s Scream 6, which also received a positive reception from critics and audiences.
