The third installment of the *National Treasure* franchise has finally moved from long-standing rumors into active development. Director Jon Turteltaub, who helmed the first two films, confirmed that Disney has officially greenlit the script for the sequel.

According to Turteltaub, the creative team has finalized a screenplay that satisfies both the studio and the producers, signaling that the project is now a “truly real” endeavor by Hollywood standards. However, he noted that the production is still in its early stages and could theoretically encounter unforeseen obstacles.

Turteltaub expressed a strong desire to reunite as much of the original cast as possible for the new chapter. Naturally, the focus remains on bringing back Nicolas Cage to reprise his iconic role as historian and treasure hunter Benjamin Gates. At this time, there has been no formal confirmation of Cage’s involvement, nor has a definitive cast list been finalized.

The original films, released in 2004 and 2007, followed the adventures of Ben Gates as he deciphered historical mysteries to uncover legendary riches. *National Treasure* became a global success, grossing $347 million, while its sequel, *National Treasure: Book of Secrets*, performed even better with a $459 million box office haul.
