Wizards of the Coast is set to unveil Mood Swings, an innovative trading card game that has been simmering in development for nearly thirty years. Conceived by industry veteran Mark Rosewater, this project offers a refreshing departure from traditional formats, prioritizing accessibility and ease of play for newcomers and seasoned enthusiasts alike.
Unlike conventional trading card games that require hours of deck-building, Mood Swings is designed to be enjoyed straight out of the box. Tailored for two to four players, this lightweight strategy game features a diverse card pool—ranging from common to mythic rarities—that ensures every deck provides a balanced experience immediately upon opening.
Rosewater, the lead designer behind Magic: The Gathering, likens the game’s structure to a “cube” draft format. Each 45-card deck is ready to play instantly, but players are encouraged to trade cards with friends, allowing for a personalized, curated collection that evolves over time.
The core gameplay is refreshingly straightforward. In a standard two-player match, participants draw from a shared deck, holding five cards at a time. Each player contributes one card per turn, and the highest value secures the round. The first to win three rounds claims victory. While the rules are simple, there is ample room for tactical depth; players must decide whether to play conservatively or sacrifice long-term resources for immediate, high-impact maneuvers. The inclusion of “moods”—cards that remain on the table across multiple rounds—adds a persistent layer of strategy. A charming touch for long-time fans is the artwork, which features minimalist, sketch-style versions of classic Magic: The Gathering card art.
The game’s design naturally facilitates comebacks, as the loser of each round is granted an additional draw, keeping the momentum shifting back and forth. By stripping away the complex resource management found in other titles, Mood Swings focuses on pure, rhythmic interaction.
Mood Swings is slated for release on June 1 as a Secret Lair product, priced at $24.99. Each deck contains 45 cards randomly selected from a master list of 133, inviting players to trade and refine their decks to match their unique strategic preferences.
