Mike Flanagan Shares Update on Henry Cavill’s Warhammer 40K Series
Mike Flanagan is known for horror projects including Midnight Mass, The Haunting of Hill House and the latest adaptation of Carrie. He also wrote the script for DC’s Clayface. Now, he is working on an adaptation of Warhammer 40K.
Earlier this year, news broke that Amazon was working on a live-action series based on the tabletop game, which has also expanded into video games, books and other media. Henry Cavill and Flanagan are attached. Cavill, an outspoken fan of the game, will star in and produce the series. Production company United Artists is also involved.
The adaptation is likely years away, according to a financial report from Warhammer creator Games Workshop.
Flanagan teases an approach to Warhammer 40K
In a recent interview with Deadline, Flanagan discussed the challenge of adapting a setting with so much material. “It’s so big. There are 700 novels, discounting the [tabletop] game, the interactive elements, and so much of the rest of the lore.”

Flanagan said the team had found “a very cool and unexpected on-ramp.” He was hesitant to share more, joking that Cavill would be furious if he revealed anything.
An animated Warhammer series is also in development
In August, Amazon was revealed to be developing an animated Warhammer 40K series. It will spin off from the Warhammer episode of the anthology series Secret Level and follow The Deathwatch, an elite group of Space Marines.
Cavill will serve as an executive producer ahead of the live-action series. Dave Wilson, who directed the Secret Level episode, will return as co-creator and director of the new series alongside John Orloff.
Amazon is also working on several video game adaptations, including God of War with Dave Bautista and Tomb Raider with Sophie Turner. A Life is Strange series recently wrapped filming. A Mass Effect series remains in development after EA shut down BioWare and canceled the next game in the series.
