Microsoft’s Gaming Copilot Spies on Players’ Gameplay and Activities to Train AI

Windows 11’s Xbox app now includes Gaming Copilot — an AI helper that offers players contextual hints, gameplay tips and feedback based on what appears on the screen. Although it remains in beta, the feature is already available when opening the Xbox Game Bar on PCs.

Users have observed that Microsoft automatically captures in-game screenshots, runs OCR to extract text, and transmits that information for AI training — even when Gaming Copilot isn’t actively used. The “Model training on text” setting is enabled by default, and the “Personalization and memory” feature is also turned on; it aggregates activity from Bing, MSN and Gaming Copilot to create a tailored experience.

ResetEra user “RedbullCola” reported that data from an unreleased, NDA-covered game was also reportedly sent to Microsoft. Privacy controls do allow users to disable text-based model training and personalization, and voice training is off by default.

Those who prefer that Microsoft not analyze their play habits or use gameplay data for model training are advised to open Gaming Copilot’s settings and turn these options off. Microsoft has not yet provided detailed information about how “Model training on text” operates, leaving users with limited clarity about the process.
