Michelle Yeoh Action Thriller The Surgeon Sets Release Date
Michelle Yeoh remains a prominent star in action cinema. Early breakout roles as Bond girl Wai Lin in the 1997 film Tomorrow Never Dies and master warrior Yu Shu Lien in the 2000 film Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon earned her worldwide critical acclaim and solidified her status as a leading figure in action films. Her role as Evelyn Quan Wang in 2023’s Everything Everywhere All at Once earned her the Academy Award for Best Actress, making her the first Asian woman to win in that category. Now, Yeoh is proving that she continues to master her craft in a new action thriller that combines elements of The Pitt and John Wick, which is arriving in theaters soon.
The Surgeon, the latest project from John Wick production company Thunder Road Films, premiered at the Toronto International Film Festival on Sept. 12 and maintains a 100% certified “Fresh” rating on Rotten Tomatoes with 13 registered reviews. However, that score may be tested once the movie reaches a wider audience. The action thriller is set to hit theaters on April 2, 2027, distributed by Columbia Pictures.
What is The Surgeon about?

In The Surgeon, Michelle Yeoh plays Eliza, a retired surgeon who must use her medical expertise to fight back against a gang of criminals who capture her and force her to perform one last operation. She stars alongside Martin Freeman from The Hobbit, Laurie Davidson, Yuri Kolokolnikov, and Joseph Mydell. The supporting cast includes Barry John Kinsella, Sabrina Pui Yee Chin, Ian Gerard Whyte, Dónall Ó Héalaí, and Emma Brady.
Reviews on Rotten Tomatoes have commended The Surgeon for its boldness. Pete Hammond wrote for Deadline that the medical thrill ride holds nothing back in exploring human anatomy as weaponry.
The Hollywood Reporter’s review by Caryn James adds:
As clever as Sethi’s screenplay is, the film’s greatest asset is Michelle Yeoh as Eliza Lim, a recently retired surgeon who is kidnapped by criminals and forced at gunpoint to operate on one of their colleagues. No one else could have brought the same serene presence, quiet intelligence and flair for action, a combination that is ideally suited to the character. Sethi’s film is perfectly in sync with Yeoh’s strengths.
Director Roshan Sethi levels up
The Surgeon differs significantly from director Roshan Sethi’s most recent film, the 2025 romantic comedy A Nice Indian Boy. Sethi stated that he drew on his personal background as a physician to develop The Surgeon, noting that many doctor-patient interactions derive from his own career experiences.
Sethi told Deadline that he wanted the film to be entertaining while accurately capturing the realities of being both a physician and a patient.
Yeoh told Deadline that she was actively searching for an action project when approached about the film.
She explained that she wanted something different from standard action films filled with heavy stunts, physicality, gore, and brutality. She noted that playing a surgeon required a specific approach that differed from portraying a martial artist.
