Marvel’s Zodiac Spy Series Gets Official Writing Team and First Details

At New York Comic Con earlier this month, Marvel Studios announced that its next live-action television show would be Zodiac. Marvel described it as a spy thriller but shared few details about who or what the show will follow. Some of that is now coming into focus, because Marvel appears to have found the writing team for Zodiac.

A new report also sheds light on the premise. According to that report, Zodiac will follow spies who chase targets with “special abilities.”

Deadline reports that Amit Cohen and Ron Leshem have been tapped as the show’s writers. Leshem created the original Israeli series Euphoria and served as an executive producer on the American adaptation starring Zendaya. Leshem and Cohen have made several shows together, including the Hulu series No Man’s Land.

The Zodiac announcement surprised some people, since Marvel’s television output has been shrinking. Wonder Man premiered this year to widespread acclaim, yet its second season was canceled. VisionQuest, which is airing now, will conclude a trilogy that began with WandaVision. Daredevil: Born Again will also end with its third season next year, so fans will have to say goodbye to Charlie Cox’s Matt Murdock once again.

With so little information, Zodiac is intriguing but also a bit worrying, because fans have nothing concrete to hold onto. For now, the show looks like the end of an era.

So, what is Marvel’s Zodiac actually going to be about?

The only confirmed detail is that Zodiac will be a spy series. In the comics, Zodiac is the name of several organizations, mostly villainous spy groups such as HYDRA.

The show’s title card offers a few hints. It uses a zodiac wheel for the “O” and works the SHIELD logo into the “A,” which suggests the infamous spy agency may return. SWORD goes unmentioned. It has seemingly taken SHIELD’s place in the current MCU timeline.

Some fans speculate that Zodiac will draw heavily from Brian Michael Bendis and Jonathan Hickman’s Secret Warriors comic. That book featured a version of Zodiac made up of the world’s greatest spymasters. Its plot involved HYDRA infiltrating SHIELD, which the MCU has already done in Captain America: The Winter Soldier and Agents of SHIELD.

The comic also starred Quake (Daisy Johnson), a main character on Agents of SHIELD. That overlap has prompted theories that Zodiac could revive the series. Phil Coulson actor Clark Gregg fueled the talk when he shared the announcement on social media. Production on Zodiac is set to begin next year, so answers may be a while away.
