Marvel Announces New Comic Series Ahead of Avengers: Doomsday

The Marvel Cinematic Universe begins its next chapter this December with the release of Avengers: Doomsday, followed by Secret Wars next year. While trailers offer only brief glimpses of what awaits the Avengers, X-Men, and Fantastic Four, the films draw heavy inspiration from the 2015 Secret Wars comic event. Ahead of the premiere of Doomsday, Marvel Comics is returning to that storyline with a new limited series.

Marvel has announced Incursions, a five-issue collection of one-shots. The stories revisit the Time Runs Out arc that directly preceded Secret Wars, chronicling how parallel realities across the multiverse collided in destructive events known as incursions. Each event forced two realities to fight for survival, ending in a final confrontation between Marvel’s Primary Universe and the Ultimate Universe.

Clashing Realities and Iconic Timelines

The first installment, X-Men: Incursions #1, arrives on Nov. 18, one month before Doomsday reaches theaters. Writer Alex Paknadel and artist Jim Towe are teaming up for the debut issue, which pits two famous mutant realities against each other. Marvel outlined the premise in the official solicitation:

Witness what happens when the universe of the mutant-ascendent House of M intersects with that of the Days of Future Past! In eight hours, only one can survive, or both will collide and be utterly annihilated! This devastating choice is left in the hands of Kate Pryde!

The debut issue features variant covers from Secret Wars artist Esad Ribić and Ultimates artist Bryan Hitch, who created a promotional cover for the entire miniseries.

The release schedule continues in December with Spider-Man: Incursions #1 and Fantastic Four: Incursions #1. Marvel will then release X-Men ’92: Incursions #1 and Avengers: Incursions #1 in January. The one-shots explore classic comic eras, alternate realities, and screen adaptations. Hitch’s variant cover features Rogue as she appeared in the animated television show X-Men: Evolution, showing how broadly the crossover draws from Marvel history.
