Martha Jones Returns in New Doctor Who Big Finish Audio Drama
Across 63 years of adventures, Doctor Who has introduced numerous characters who fans feel never received their full due. Names like Belinda Chandra, Danny Pink, and classic-era companions Katarina and Sara Kingdom often come up in those discussions.
Martha Jones, portrayed by Freema Agyeman, stands out among companions who merit another turn in the spotlight. Martha entered the series as a quick-witted medical student in the 2007 series 3 premiere, “Smith and Jones.” She traveled alongside David Tennant‘s Tenth Doctor for just 13 episodes before departing, later returning for guest appearances in series 4.
David Tennant Hopes to Reunite With Freema Agyeman
A return to Martha and the Doctor’s shared history may not be out of reach. Speaking with Doctor Who Magazine for issue 633, Tennant reflected on recording audio dramas for Big Finish and expressed an appetite to record more stories.

“It’s always just a joy to come back. Catherine [Tate] and I have done some Big Finish audio stories. Billie and I have done some,” Tennant said. “It might be nice to do some with Freema [Agyeman]; that would complete the set.”
While Tennant’s comments do not confirm an active project, audio stories with Martha could take several forms. Writers could revisit her original travels with the Tenth Doctor or pair her with the Fourteenth Doctor. Following Jodie Whittaker’s tenure, the Time Lord regenerated back into Tennant’s likeness to confront unresolved trauma. That storyline culminated in a bi-generation, allowing the Fourteenth Doctor to rest on Earth alongside Donna Noble while remaining open to new journeys.
Addressing Unfinished Business Between Martha and the Doctor

Revisiting Martha alongside the Fourteenth Doctor presents a compelling narrative opportunity. During series 3, the Tenth Doctor was grieving the loss of Rose Tyler, leaving him detached and inconsiderate toward Martha. Throughout their travels, he repeatedly compared her to Rose and brushed off her concerns as a Black woman in historical settings such as “The Shakespeare Code” and “Human Nature.”
Despite that friction, Martha repeatedly saved the Doctor’s life. She resuscitated him in “Smith and Jones,” helped him recover his memories in “The Family of Blood,” and spent a year walking the globe to rally humanity against the Master in “Last of the Time Lords.”
The Fourteenth Doctor’s arc centers on healing past wounds. While the television specials reconciled his history with Donna Noble, the unresolved tension between the Doctor and Martha remains unaddressed. A Big Finish audio production could explore those lingering emotions directly.

Agyeman has already worked with Big Finish on audio plays for the spin-off series Torchwood, and Tennant remains an active collaborator with the company. With Tennant eager to reunite, the pieces exist for Martha Jones to return to the audio realm.
