Mark Wahlberg’s The Family Plan Continues Streaming Success on Apple TV+

Mark Wahlberg has built much of his film career around two distinct styles. On one hand, he plays gritty action leads in movies such as Shooter, Lone Survivor, Deepwater Horizon, and the Transformers franchise. On the other hand, he leans into comedy in titles like The Other Guys, Ted, and Daddy’s Home, where his tough persona becomes the punchline.

One release bridges those two approaches by mixing suburban family dynamics with car chases and hitmen. That project is The Family Plan, a 2023 Apple TV action-comedy starring Wahlberg alongside Michelle Monaghan. Nearly three years after its debut, the film has climbed back up the platform’s viewership rankings to reach the No. 4 spot, according to FlixPatrol.

What is The Family Plan about?

Dan Morgan, played by Wahlberg, works as a quiet car salesman living in the suburbs with his wife Jessica, portrayed by Monaghan, and their three children. Beneath that ordinary routine lies a past life as an elite government assassin.

Old enemies eventually discover his whereabouts, forcing Dan to load his family into a minivan under the pretense of a spontaneous road trip to Las Vegas. He must protect them from attackers during the drive while keeping his combat background a secret from his household.

Critical reception was lukewarm upon release. The Family Plan holds a 27% critics score on Rotten Tomatoes, with multiple reviewers pointing to standard action-comedy tropes.

The reception did not slow down the franchise. Apple released The Family Plan 2 in 2025, bringing Wahlberg and Monaghan back together as the Morgan family faces a new set of threats during a trip across Europe.
