Bungie has officially confirmed that Marathon Season 2 will launch on June 2. In anticipation of this update, the development team published an extensive retrospective and roadmap, analyzing the successes and shortcomings of the game’s debut season. Most notably, the studio revealed plans to introduce experimental PvE (Player vs. Environment) modes, offering a fresh way to engage with the Marathon universe.
Recognizing that the high-stakes, “nail-biting” nature of competitive extraction shooters can be mentally exhausting, Bungie intends to provide a more relaxed environment for players to decompress. These experimental PvE additions are designed to complement the core experience rather than replace it.

According to the developers, the roadmap includes two distinct phases for these trials:
- Early Season: A PvE-focused experience with light PvP elements.
- Mid-to-Late Season: A dedicated PvE-only mode emphasizing cooperative objectives and persistent progress across multiple matches.
While the title’s intense PvP remains a standout feature, these cooperative initiatives could lower the barrier to entry for new players, potentially acting as a bridge to the game’s more competitive loops. Looking ahead, Bungie plans to continue testing new mechanics—including purely PvP-focused variations—to determine which elements should become permanent fixtures in the game’s evolving ecosystem.
Looking Beyond Season 2
The developer’s long-term vision is ambitious:
- Season 3: Will overhaul the early-game experience, featuring significant updates to the Perimeter map, a new Runner shell, and fresh content drops.
- Season 4: Focuses on expanding the depth and nuance of the core extraction gameplay.
- Season 5: Aims to unify the various facets of the game, blending PvE and PvP into a cohesive sci-fi narrative experience.

Additionally, Season 2 will see the return of the popular “Bungie Duos” mode, alongside increased vault capacity and faster faction progression. Players can expect more information regarding the Night Marsh mission, the Cradle progression system, and the new Sentinel Runner shell in a follow-up briefing during the week of May 25.
