Developers Explain Why Silent Hill: Townfall Was Moved to Scotland
John McLellan explained that moving the setting to Scotland allowed the Scottish studio Screen Burn to recreate a familiar environment more authentically than an unfamiliar American town.
Silent Hill: Townfall will be the first game in the series set on the coast of Scotland. Director John McLellan explained why studio Screen Burn chose a new location instead of the town of Silent Hill.
If you have ever been to Scotland, you know it is full of monsters and fog, so it seemed to us like a very fitting place.
McLellan then explained that the team aimed to create a town that would look plausible. According to him, players must believe that such a place could truly exist and feel a connection to its residents and their history.
The director noted that the studio is located in Scotland, making it easier for the team to authentically recreate a familiar environment rather than an American city that the developers never knew quite as well. He added that the choice of setting is important for the story, although he did not disclose any details.
