MagicX May Release Pocket Dream Handheld, a Vertical Version of Mini Dream

MagicX employees are considering the development of a vertical handheld console called the Pocket Dream. Much like the Mini Dream, it could feature four configuration options, meaning one of the models would pack a custom 3.3-inch OLED display, a 3800 mAh battery, and a Rockchip RK3566 chip.

MagicX announced that development of the Mini Dream handheld has moved into its second phase. At the same time, the team is currently exploring the possibility of creating a handheld device named the Pocket Dream.

The new device features the same custom 3.3-inch OLED display and base configuration as the Mini Dream, but adopts a vertical form factor. This design choice aims to deliver a completely different user experience compared to the horizontal Mini Dream.

According to MagicX, a vertical grip evokes nostalgia for classic handheld consoles like the Game Boy and WonderSwan. The new device is intended for use during commutes, short gaming sessions, or moments when players want to quickly turn on a device and play their favorite titles.

The dimensions of the Pocket Dream measure 107 × 72 × 22 mm. It also supports the same four SoC variants available for the Mini Dream, which includes both Linux and Android versions.

The control layout of the Pocket Dream places an emphasis on thumbsticks positioned above the D-pad and buttons. Users can only hope that selecting this dual-analog layout will not cause discomfort during retro gaming.

As typically happens with devices from MagicX, the design might still change depending on community feedback. There is also a chance that the Pocket Dream may never see the light of day.
