Gavin Verhey, lead designer for Magic: The Gathering, has long championed video-game crossovers and is eager for more — placing Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 at the top of his wishlist.
In recent years, MTG has teamed up with major franchises, from Fallout to the record‑setting Final Fantasy crossover. The Universes Beyond program lets Wizards craft branded MTG sets from across entertainment, but right now Verhey has his sights set on a single title.
Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 became one of 2025’s breakout sensations and is a contender for numerous Game of the Year awards. Verhey said he would love to see the game receive its own MTG set. He pointed out that producing the Final Fantasy set was a huge endeavor: sixteen games, each offering 40+ hours of play, had to be condensed into one card set while maintaining coherence and balance.
“Game of the year this year, huh? It would be amazing to make a set for Expedition 33.”
The designer explained why video games make such good crossover partners:
“Video‑game IPs are a natural fit for Magic. New players can immediately understand the rules, the mana systems, and the goals. The potential is enormous, and I hope we’ll see more projects ahead. We’ve already done Fallout and Warhammer, and I’m hopeful more successful collaborations will follow.”
