For seven decades, LEGO has served as a cornerstone of creativity, allowing enthusiasts of all ages to manifest their wildest imaginations through interlocking plastic. Over the years, the Danish toy titan has consistently pivoted to mirror the shifting interests of new generations. While the catalog once focused on generic cityscapes and deep-space explorers, today’s retail shelves are a vibrant tapestry of licensed giants like Marvel, Star Wars, and high-octane franchises like Fast & Furious. This evolution has successfully bridged the gap between traditional play and beloved digital media.

At the recent Consumer Electronics Show, the LEGO Group unveiled its next major innovation. The company introduced LEGO Smart Play, a sophisticated ecosystem that integrates digital intelligence into physical builds via a revolutionary “smart brick.” This isn’t merely a standalone component; the launch is bolstered by three new Star Wars construction sets specifically engineered to leverage this interactive hardware.

Fans of the Super Mario LEGO line will recognize the DNA of this technology, which previously utilized specialized pieces to trigger sound effects. However, Smart Play represents a significant leap forward in complexity. According to an official press release, this new system “brings play to life” through an array of integrated hardware, including accelerometers, light and sound sensors, and a miniature speaker powered by an onboard synthesizer—all supported by the convenience of wireless charging.

The versatility of Smart Play extends beyond the core brick. LEGO is also debuting Smart Play minifigures and interactive “tags”—specialized two-by-two flat tiles. When paired with the central power source, these components facilitate a range of sensory feedback, from dynamic visuals and audio cues to synchronized animations, as highlighted in the company’s recent promotional footage.

While the full scope of the technology’s capabilities is still being explored, the choice of Star Wars as the flagship theme is a clear nod to the brand’s dedicated adult fan base. The inaugural trio of sets is scheduled for a March 1 release, with pre-orders opening on January 9 through LEGO’s official portal and select global retailers. Explore the initial lineup below.

While these premium sets clearly appeal to collectors, LEGO views the advancement as a fundamental shift in how children engage with their toys. Tom Donaldson, Senior Vice President and Head of LEGO’s Creative Play Lab, stated: “We are confident that we are defining a new benchmark for immersive, imaginative play, and we are eager to see how children interact with this innovation upon its release.”

For those concerned about the relevance of their existing collections, rest assured that your “bucket of bricks” remains as valuable as ever. The Smart Play ecosystem is fully backward-compatible with the standard LEGO grid. This integration ensures that veteran builders can incorporate high-tech interactions into their custom creations, potentially leading to some truly avant-garde “MOCs” (My Own Creations).

The first wave of LEGO Smart Play arrives on March 1, with the pre-order window commencing January 9.
