Lego Batman: Legacy of the Dark Knight is set to hit shelves this Friday, with Deluxe Edition players gaining early access starting Tuesday. Critics have already weighed in, and the consensus is clear: this latest brick-based adventure stands as a triumphant successor to the esteemed Batman: Arkham trilogy.
Beyond simply drawing inspiration from the source material, it turns out that the Arkham series had a direct hand in the project. Industry analysis of the game’s credits has confirmed that Rocksteady Studios served as a co-developer on Legacy of the Dark Knight.
As reported by VGC, nearly two dozen Rocksteady staff members—including key producers and programmers—are listed in the game’s credits. Rocksteady is, of course, the creative force behind Batman: Arkham Asylum, Arkham City, Arkham Knight, and Arkham VR. Their most recent release, 2024’s Suicide Squad: Kill the Justice League, received a significantly more polarized reception compared to their celebrated Batman titles.
The credits also highlight contributions from Warner Bros. Games Montreal, the studio responsible for Batman: Arkham Origins and Gotham Knights, which has frequently provided auxiliary support on various other DC Comics titles.
This internal synergy is a hallmark of the Warner Bros. ecosystem. With Rocksteady, Warner Bros. Games Montreal, and the primary developer, TT Games, all under the same corporate umbrella, such cross-studio cooperation is standard practice. As Jonathan Smith, head of development at TT Games, shared with Polygon, this collaborative spirit is simply how they operate.
“The studios frequently collaborate and provide support on each other’s projects. We are thrilled to be part of the WB Games family, and we have many close friends and talented colleagues at our sister studios,” Smith explained.
In his discussion with Polygon, Smith emphasized that the team’s goal was to craft “the definitive Batman game.” Achieving that meant thoroughly overhauling the combat mechanics, ultimately resulting in what effectively feels like an Arkham experience built entirely from Lego bricks.
