Wildflower Interactive, the creative studio established in 2022 by The Last of Us co-creator and game director Bruce Straley, has officially unveiled its debut project: an enchanting, atmospheric adventure titled Coven of the Chicken Foot. Premiering at The Game Awards 2025, the game is described as a poignant single-player journey centered on the symbiotic relationship between an elderly witch and a mysterious entity as they labor to fulfill a sacred oath.
The reveal trailer showcases a distinct focus on companion-driven mechanics. Players step into the shoes of Gertie, a seasoned witch who must collaborate with an eccentric creature to navigate a vibrant, treacherous world. Together, they will unravel intricate puzzles and overcome environmental hazards through a mix of ingenuity and platforming.
According to Wildflower, the “creature-companion” isn’t just a tool, but a fully realized character with its own agency. It observes, adapts, and develops new behaviors based on the player’s choices and contextual surroundings. This unpredictable ally possesses its own motivations and surprises, ensuring that the bond between Gertie and the creature feels organic and evolving.

The game’s narrative setup flips traditional fantasy tropes on their head. In a world where the dungeons have already been looted and the legendary monsters slain, the “heroes” of old have moved on. Gertie, however, sees this as her moment to prove her worth to the coven. Pledging to rectify the damage left by the arrogance of past champions, she must venture into the unknown with her unorthodox companion by her side.
Gertie’s journey will take her through diverse locales, from sun-drenched forests and murky bogs to the grim catacombs of fallen warriors. Notably, Gertie does not rely on traditional combat; there are no swords to swing or superhuman feats. Instead, survival depends entirely on her ability to communicate and harmonize with her companion.
In a unique design choice, the duo does not share a common language. Gertie speaks while the creature communicates through sounds and gestures. This linguistic barrier encourages players to decipher the creature’s true intentions through observation and environmental storytelling, allowing the world’s history and the narrative to unfold naturally without heavy-handed exposition.
