Last Epoch developers face difficulties monetizing the Orobyss expansion

New content is coming soon, but it remains unclear how players will be expected to pay for it.

The team behind the acclaimed ARPG Last Epoch is preparing not only new seasons, but also the Orobyss expansion.

Last Epoch’s game director, Judd Kobler, said:

“We’re currently finalizing the roadmap for the upcoming season and the expansion, and we’ll share it with you shortly. We’re mainly polishing the visuals and intentionally avoiding too many specifics about the season’s content, because revealing too much could force us to change plans soon after announcement (creating a live-service game is an extremely iterative process).”

However, the studio has encountered a stumbling block — it has not yet determined how Orobyss will be monetized.

Kobler recalled the team’s origins:

“Many years ago, when we were a much smaller team formed on Reddit, our goal was to keep content free of charge; yet revenue from cosmetic sales did not sustainably cover our development costs in the long run.

Our studio has grown significantly, and we now pay our employees competitive salaries. As is typical for an ARPG, our expenses have increased. We’re still modelling the monetization approach for the expansion, and once a decision is reached we’ll share it with you immediately.”
