Netflix’s streak of animated successes continues to impress, following a banner year defined by the breakout hit KPop Demon Hunters. Now, the streamer is gearing up to launch its next major animated event: Charlie vs. the Chocolate Factory.
The project features Kit Connor (Heartstopper) lending his voice to the newcomer Charlie Paley, while the iconic chocolatier Willy Wonka is voiced by Taika Waititi (Jojo Rabbit), who is also attached as an executive producer.
Directing duties are helmed by the duo Jared Stern (The LEGO Batman Movie) and Elaine Bogan (Spirit Untamed), with industry veterans Aron Warner (Shrek) and Timothy Yoo (Green Eggs and Ham) producing. The visual heavy-lifting will be handled by Sony Pictures Imageworks, the powerhouse studio behind the dazzling aesthetics of Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse and KPop Demon Hunters.
While Roald Dahl’s classic tale traditionally follows young Charlie Bucket’s excursion into Wonka’s whimsical factory, this fresh reimagining takes a much bolder path.
Image: Warner Bros./Everett CollectionIn this modern-day, London-set narrative, Wonka finds himself freshly released from prison after serving time for the “unfortunate” incident of turning a child into a blueberry. Upon his return to the factory, he hopes to counter the cynicism of the modern era with his trademark sugary delights. However, teenager Charlie Paley has a desperate agenda: he and his friends plan to infiltrate the factory, swipe a legendary Wonka Bar, and use it to save their families from eviction. Naturally, the eccentric factory’s defensive measures ensure that their heist is anything but peaceful.
“Having grown up immersed in the beautifully bizarre universe of Willy Wonka, it is a true honor to continue his saga for a more mature audience,” directors Stern and Bogan stated in a press release. “Utilizing the limitless potential of animation allows us to present a version of Charlie vs. the Chocolate Factory that is more delightfully unhinged than anything you’ve seen before. If we miss the mark, feel free to send us down the rubbish chute!”
While the story of the Golden Ticket has been told numerous times, this marks the first instance of the IP receiving such a radical contemporary overhaul, rendered entirely in a high-fidelity animated format.
Charlie vs. the Chocolate Factory is slated for its Netflix premiere in 2027.
