A ‘Lord of the Rings’ Video Game Just Shadow Dropped, and There May Be More to Come

Prepare your gear because a journey back to Middle-earth awaits. In a sudden surprise drop on Tuesday, a beloved blast from the past has returned. Brought back by publisher Aspyr, The Lord of the Rings: War in the North has officially landed on contemporary gaming hardware.

Debuting originally in 2011, War in the North is an action RPG that draws heavy inspiration from both J.R.R. Tolkien’s legendary literary works and Peter Jackson’s iconic cinematic trilogy, while cleverly weaving in original narratives and fresh faces. As producer Ruth Tomandl shared with GameSpot during its initial rollout, the title allows players to encounter familiar fan-favorites alongside brand-new figures and deep-cut literary characters absent from the films, creating the ultimate convergence of Tolkien’s expansive universe.

While Frodo and Sam embark on their perilous quest to cast the One Ring into the fires of Mount Doom, players take command of an entirely separate trio of champions fighting Sauron’s armies across the northern theater. This refreshed release—suitably titled the Legacy Edition—introduces seamless character switching, three-player online co-op, and two-player split-screen functionality. Furthermore, War in the North — Legacy Edition elevates the experience with robust 60 frames-per-second support, streamlined user interface enhancements, expanded save slots, convenient autosaves, and immersive gyro motion controls on both the PlayStation 5 and Nintendo Switch.

Upon its original debut, The Lord of the Rings: War in the North received a somewhat muted reception, pulling in a modest Metacritic average of 61 across 48 Xbox 360 critiques (though it performed slightly better on PC with a 66). Having remained absent from digital storefronts since 2019, this new Legacy Edition serves as a triumphant, albeit delightfully rustic, homecoming for the title.

Even more thrilling is the tantalizing hint that additional Tolkien-based digital adventures could receive the remaster treatment down the line. A recent promotional brief noted that enthusiasts can anticipate even more classic revivals from this cherished property courtesy of Aspyr. Given the studio’s extensive history of porting and updating classic Star Wars titles, the prospect of revisiting vintage Middle-earth gems on modern hardware is bound to delight nostalgic gamers—fingers crossed that these upcoming projects fare better than some of those earlier Lucasfilm rollouts. Historically, Jackson’s cinematic adaptations spawned surprisingly robust tie-in games, and experiencing them again on current hardware sounds like an absolute treat.
