Kinoteka has secured the rights for a contemporary adaptation of Karen Shakhnazarov’s iconic novella, “Courier.” The film is slated for release in the first half of 2027.
The project will be helmed by director Ilya Ermolov (“The Surgeon”), with Mikhail Zubko (“Happy End”) adapting the screenplay. Georgy Malkov (“To Grandfather in the Village”) is on board as producer. While the cast and specific plot nuances remain under wraps, production is scheduled to commence this summer.
“As far as I can tell, both the film and the original novella remain highly relevant to today’s youth. Crafting a picture that explores those same fundamental questions within our modern context strikes me as the right endeavor,”
Shakhnazarov stated in a press release. The original “Courier” film premiered in 1987, following the story of Ivan Miroshnikov (played by Fyodor Dunayevsky), a cynical young courier staging a rebellious stand against the world around him. The classic drew an audience of over 50 million viewers.
