“Supergirl” box office opening is the worst for DC in 22 years

The blockbuster Supergirl has officially concluded its theatrical run, failing to recoup its budget after earning a disappointing $125.9 million worldwide.

This final tally marks the weakest box office performance for a DC Universe project in over two decades. The studio’s previous nadir was the 2004 film Catwoman, starring Halle Berry, which grossed only $82 million (unadjusted for inflation). Supergirl also finished behind other recent underperformers, including Jared Leto’s Morbius ($167.4 million) and Joker: Folie à Deux ($207.5 million).

Warner Bros. invested $180 million into the production of Supergirl, with an additional $120 million spent on its marketing campaign. Critical reception offered little reprieve, with the film holding a lackluster 52% score on Rotten Tomatoes and a 50/100 rating on Metacritic. The movie stars Milly Alcock (House of the Dragon) and was directed by Craig Gillespie (Cruella).

During a recent financial earnings call, Warner Bros. CEO David Zaslav opted not to address the film’s lackluster performance. Instead, he sought to reassure Wall Street analysts by emphasizing the projected success of James Gunn’s upcoming Superman sequel, which is slated for a July 2027 release.
