Johnny Depp Plans to Return to Pirates of the Caribbean
Johnny Depp is reportedly weighing a potential return to his iconic role as Captain Jack Sparrow in the Pirates of the Caribbean franchise. This update was shared by producer Jerry Bruckheimer during the D23 fan event in Anaheim, California.
“We are currently in discussions with Johnny and developing a script; we are hopeful it will come to fruition,”
— Bruckheimer stated in an interview with Deadline.
Previously, the producer had noted that the project’s viability hinges on the strength of the sixth film’s screenplay. One of the latest drafts was penned by British screenwriter Krysty Wilson-Cairns (1917). Bruckheimer further clarified that the next installment is envisioned as a franchise reboot. Meanwhile, Disney is also developing a separate Pirates spin-off featuring Margot Robbie, though the current status of that production remains uncertain.
Depp portrayed Jack Sparrow across all five films in the series between 2003 and 2017, with the franchise generating a massive $4.5 billion at the global box office. Disney initially severed ties with the actor following domestic abuse allegations made by his former wife, Amber Heard.
This November, Depp is set to appear in the fantasy film Ebenezer, an adaptation inspired by Charles Dickens’ A Christmas Carol.
