Directors Guild of America Urges Faster Merger of Paramount and Warner Bros

The Directors Guild of America (DGA) and the film and television production union IATSE have officially petitioned California Attorney General Rob Bonta and Paramount’s leadership to resolve the ongoing legal disputes surrounding the proposed merger of Paramount and Warner Bros. Discovery, according to Variety.

In a joint letter addressed to both Bonta and Paramount Skydance CEO David Ellison, the organizations cautioned that the protracted uncertainty regarding the deal is already exerting a detrimental impact on Hollywood production. Union representatives noted that several projects have been indefinitely postponed or scrapped entirely due to the persistent ambiguity concerning the future of the two media giants.

While both the DGA and IATSE acknowledge that large-scale corporate mergers rarely benefit the workforce, they maintain that the current legal standoff poses an even greater threat to an industry already grappling with a significant downturn in production and widespread job losses.

The unions are advocating for a structured settlement that would allow the merger to proceed under specific regulatory conditions. Most notably, they insist that Paramount and Warner Bros. must maintain their operations as distinct studios, retaining their own independent production, distribution, and marketing arms. Furthermore, the agreement would require each entity to produce a minimum of 15 feature films annually.
