Joaquin Phoenix to reunite with C’mon C’mon director for new project

Academy Award winner Joaquin Phoenix is set to headline an upcoming, currently untitled project from director Mike Mills (known for C’mon C’mon) and the studio A24, according to a report by Production Weekly.

Production is scheduled to commence this January. Specific plot details and a projected release date have yet to be disclosed. Mills previously hinted that the film would continue his exploration of familial dynamics, albeit with a more “raw” and “primal” approach.

A24’s C’mon C’mon, released in 2021, centered on a documentary filmmaker building a bond with his young nephew, played by Woody Norman. The film garnered widespread critical acclaim, currently holding a 94% approval rating on Rotten Tomatoes.

This project marks Phoenix’s first major commitment following his role in Ari Aster’s Eddington. Notably, in 2025, Phoenix made headlines for his abrupt withdrawal from Todd Haynes’ romantic drama just days before production began. Pedro Pascal was subsequently cast as his replacement, and the film is now slated for a 2027 release.
