Rodrigo Sorogoyen’s Spanish drama, “My Love,” featuring Javier Bardem in the lead role, held its highly anticipated premiere in the main competition at the 79th Cannes Film Festival.
The narrative centers on a director who reaches out to his estranged daughter (Vicky Luengo), with whom he has had no contact for years, to offer her a role in his latest project. Their collaboration forces them to confront long-standing grievances, turning the production into a harrowing emotional ordeal for both.
“Javier and I did not meet during the preparation phase; Rodrigo intentionally wanted to maintain a sense of distance and awkwardness between us. We first encountered one another during the filming of the opening scene. I put a great deal of work into developing my character, reflecting deeply on her thoughts and emotions. Javier is such an exceptional scene partner that all I had to do was channel that preparation toward him,”
— Luengo shared. This is not Bardem’s first time at Cannes; in 2010, the actor was awarded the “Silver Palm” for Best Actor for his performance in Alejandro González Iñárritu’s drama, “Biutiful.”
“My favorite moment at the festival is when the cast walks up the red carpet to greet Thierry Frémaux (the festival director). There is a unique sensation when you prepare to present a film to more than two and a half thousand people—sharing that experience with them and finally revealing the work you have poured so much time into,”
— Bardem remarked. “My Love” will be distributed in Russia by A-One and Vesta; however, a release date has yet to be announced.
