Jason Statham’s Mutiny Falls Short of The Beekeeper on Rotten Tomatoes

Jason Statham has another mid-budget action movie heading to theaters. While Mutiny opens on Friday, Aug. 21, early reviews are already painting a bleak picture of the actor’s latest project.

Directed by Jean-François Richet, who previously helmed the 2023 Gerard Butler and Mike Colter action thriller Plane, Mutiny runs for a tight 95 minutes. Statham plays a protagonist with vague military or law enforcement credentials aboard a human trafficking vessel transporting women and children. The narrative exists primarily as an excuse for Statham to dismantle villains across the ship. The premise fits alongside his extensive catalog of punchy genre titles, including The Transporter, The Mechanic, The Beekeeper, A Working Man, and Shelter.

The reception so far suggests this outing falls short of his best work. On Rotten Tomatoes, Mutiny holds a 41% approval rating based on 22 reviews, landing it firmly in rotten territory. Many critics offered blunt assessments. One review argued the release “has so little personality that you could place it in a bus station, and the experience wouldn’t change one bit. Nobody involved seems to care, and neither should we.” Matt Goldberg of Commentary Track similarly noted that the feature “feels like a waste” of the lead actor’s abilities.

A few reviewers found value in the formulaic violence. Writing for Variety, Owen Gleiberman remarked, “It’s all in the timing — the rhythm of revenge murder that’s perfect, because it’s done by any means necessary. Jason Statham is keeping that dream alive.” Ian Sandwell of Digital Spy offered a similar defense, stating, “It won’t convert anybody who foolishly isn’t a fan of ‘Jason Statham gets revenge’, but everybody else will have a damn good time.”

Audiences can judge the high-seas brawler for themselves when Mutiny arrives in theaters on Aug. 21.
