Jason Momoa, the star of Aquaman and the upcoming Minecraft movie, has been tapped to lead the cinematic adaptation of the hit video game Helldivers. The high-profile casting news was first reported by Deadline.
The film is currently scheduled to hit theaters on November 10, 2027. While rumors of the project first surfaced last December, the production has gained significant momentum with Fast & Furious 9 director Justin Lin at the helm and Gary Dauberman (It) crafting the screenplay.
The production is a collaborative effort between Sony Pictures and PlayStation Productions, the same powerhouse duo behind the 2022 Uncharted film starring Tom Holland.
The Helldivers franchise began in 2015, followed by a massive breakout sequel in early 2024. The story follows the “Helldivers,” an elite special forces unit from the managed democracy of Super-Earth. These soldiers are tasked with defending their home by waging a relentless intergalactic war against three hostile alien factions: the bugs, cyborgs, and the Illuminates.
Momoa, who recently starred in the action-comedy The Wrecking Crew, has a packed schedule ahead. His upcoming slate includes roles in Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow, a new Street Fighter adaptation, and the third installment of the Dune franchise.
