James Gunn’s Superman Movie Wraps Filming

Production has wrapped on Superman: Man of Tomorrow, the next major DC Universe feature from writer and director James Gunn. Gunn shared the update on Threads alongside photos from the set.

“That’s a wrap on principal photography for Man of Tomorrow,” Gunn wrote. “Truly a joyful experience and I have immense gratitude to my cast and crew. First photo: Nicholas Hoult jumped in the lake after last shot. Second photo: The brain trust (except Brian) around video village during the whole shoot. They make making movies fun.”

The feature serves as a direct sequel to Gunn’s 2025 film Superman, which starred David Corenswet as Clark Kent and Nicholas Hoult as Lex Luthor. While the 2025 release performed well at the box office to launch the rebooted DC Universe, the franchise saw a setback in 2026 when Supergirl struggled with critics and moviegoers.

Filming moved swiftly after Gunn announced the start of production on Instagram on April 20. The upcoming storyline finds Superman and Luthor joining forces against Brainiac, played by Lars Eidinger. The alien artificial intelligence shares a history with Luthor as well as Superman’s cousin Kara Zor-El, with Milly Alcock returning to reprise her role as Supergirl.

Several other cast members from the 2025 film return for the sequel, including Rachel Brosnahan as Lois Lane, Skyler Gisondo as Jimmy Olsen, Sara Sampaio as Eve Teschmacher, Isabela Merced as Hawkgirl, Nathan Fillion as Guy Gardner, and Edi Gathegi as Mister Terrific.

Superman: Man of Tomorrow arrives in theaters on July 9, 2027. The film will also mark the feature film debut of Aaron Pierre as Green Lantern John Stewart, following the character’s introduction in the HBO series Lanterns.
