IO Interactive Explains Why 007: First Light Doesn’t Copy the Movies

In 007: First Light, players will discover James Bond’s origin and see how he earned his 00 designation and status as an operative. Creative Director Hakan Abrak said in an interview that IO Interactive avoided working with an already fully defined character and therefore “would never make a film adaptation.”

“We’re not interested in spending resources on, for example, making Pierce Brosnan as photorealistic as possible.”

He added that, while he respects previous Bond games such as GoldenEye and James Bond 007: Nightfire, the studio prioritizes leaving its own imprint on the narrative and development process.

Cinematic and Narrative Director Martin Emborg noted that certain outward aspects of Bond’s image quickly become superficial:

“Everyone knows how he drinks, how he dresses, what he drives. Those details soon lose their weight. To generate real emotion, that’s not enough.”

The studio intends to concentrate on “an original story about the person who becomes James Bond,” rather than rehashing familiar tropes.

The new title aims to deliver a richer character study, drawing on the existing Bond novels and films. Emborg emphasized:

“Different actors’ interpretations create the opportunity to discover a fresh perspective.”

In First Light, Bond will be portrayed by Patrick Gibson (“Dexter: Original Sin”), rather than by established actors like Connery, Brosnan, or Craig.

007: First Light is scheduled for release on March 27, 2027 for PC, PS5, Xbox Series X/S, and Nintendo Switch 2.
