Insomniac Games Denies Using AI in Marvel’s Wolverine and Considers Making Smell Trail Optional
Insomniac Games has updated Marvel’s Wolverine to tone down the game’s bright navigation hints after receiving feedback from players.
After publishing gameplay footage, many players raised questions for the creators of Marvel’s Wolverine. Insomniac Games decided to visualize Wolverine’s heightened senses by adding a bright “scent trail” to the game that guides the player’s path.
The situation did not improve by launch. Players saw this visual cue in full effect, and many did not like it. The developers took notice of the feedback, and a hotfix soon arrived that also addressed some bugs causing crashes.
They also dialed back the trail: “In this hotfix, we adjusted the display of the ‘scent trail’ and ‘sound perception’ indicators,” making the indicator effects less bright.
Examples of Marvel’s Wolverine gameplay before and after the update can be viewed at the following link.
The developers of Marvel’s Wolverine reported that they are exploring further ways to improve these abilities for Wolverine, including considering the option to add a toggle to turn them on and off.
Part of the criticism directed at the authors of Marvel’s Wolverine also relates to “slop generated by neural networks.” According to some players, artificial intelligence was used during development. A screenshot spread across the internet showing a restroom sign where a single figure appeared to be duplicated.

A representative for Insomniac Games issued a denial:
No. It is a UV mapping bug, and we are preparing a fix. There are no artificial intelligence-generated objects in Marvel’s Wolverine.
