Insidious Franchise Runs Out of Steam After 15 Years

The Insidious franchise has built its legacy on domestic terror. Created by horror filmmakers Leigh Whannell and James Wan, the long-running Blumhouse series centers on families stalked by malevolent entities from the Further, an alternate realm accessible only to gifted individuals. Insidious: Out of the Further takes a new step for the franchise by introducing a standalone cast of characters, focusing its story on the relationship between mothers and daughters.

Writer-director Jacob Chase establishes that theme early. In the opening scene, a self-reliant young girl returns home from school to find her mother slumped unconscious across the dining table. Accustomed to the routine, the child quietly prepares her own meal, finishes her homework, and tucks herself into bed. When her mother eventually hovers near the bedroom entrance like an encroaching shadow, Chase keeps the frame tight on the child before revealing the mother’s vacant, damaged gaze.

Years later, the girl has grown into Gemma, played by Amelia Eve. Now working as a dentist, Gemma raises her young daughter Maya, played by Island Austin, in the same family home. The garage remains packed with storage boxes filled with her deceased mother’s belongings. Gemma wants to give Maya a safe childhood, but strange occurrences begin after an unsettling trio of neighbors moves onto the block. Gemma soon suffers severe nightmares that pull her back to her childhood trauma. As she struggles to distinguish nightmares from reality, her actions begin to mirror her mother’s unraveling state, frightening Maya.

Paranormal investigator Elise Rainier, played by Lin Shaye, arrives to explain the supernatural threat. Elise informs Gemma that these nighttime encounters are real events rather than bad dreams. Gemma is a traveler capable of stepping into the Further, which makes her a prime target for the entities trapped there.

Chase delivers several striking scares across the film. Gemma’s dental career provides fertile ground for squeamish imagery, incorporating mouth props and dental drills directly into the demonic creature designs. Another sequence turns a childhood pillow fort into an intricate, claustrophobic labyrinth that generates strong suspense.

The broader narrative loses momentum between these highlights. Chase lets the story drift through long stretches in the Further, which slows down the pacing and limits character development. As the sixth installment in the series and Chase’s first major studio feature, the production favors scale over intimacy. One frantic encounter pits Gemma against a large mob of spirits, yet the chaotic spectacle never matches the chilling simplicity found in earlier movies, such as the quiet reveal of the red-faced demon.

Insidious: Out of the Further finds its strongest footing in the painful generational ties shared between mother and child, though the emotional weight often gets buried beneath excessive supernatural set pieces.

Insidious: Out of the Further premieres in theaters Friday, August 21.
