Sometimes a sudden rise on Steam can take even the developers by surprise.
Idle Pixel Fantasy was released on Steam recently. It’s a free title that forgoes the usual genre microtransactions.
Five days after launch, Max Ritters recorded his first earnings: over $4,000. He monetizes the game through the sale of small optional add-ons.
The success came as a shock — he had previously released several projects that never gained much traction.
“Last Monday I launched my small free-to-play game Idle Pixel Fantasy and was blown away by the player turnout. As you can see, my wishlist numbers were modest, and the Steam page had been live for only a month before release.
I looked at many other free games and found that most rely on in-game microtransactions, which I dislike. So I added distinct mini-expansions that are visible on the Steam page. I made it explicitly clear they are entirely optional and unnecessary, but they’re a nice way for players to support me as a developer. It seems people appreciated the honesty and the lack of hidden purchases.”
Idle Pixel Fantasy can be completed in roughly 3–4 hours and started out as a side project for Max Ritters. He built it in just one and a half months. Now he intends to keep improving the game — a substantial update is in development.
