The world of video games can draw people in so deeply that it becomes a real problem.
Recently psychiatrist Ruslan Isaev spoke with the publication “Komsomolskaya Pravda” and outlined signs of gaming addiction in both teenagers and adults.
According to the expert, the first warning sign is when someone spends roughly 60–70% of their time playing games.
[because adolescents’ prefrontal cortex — which governs impulse control and the assessment of consequences — is not yet fully matured] they are more prone to becoming absorbed in games, especially those that deliver rapid, vivid bursts of pleasure or provide an escape from anxiety or boredom. Still, in our practice we often see mature adults who are vulnerable to gambling as well.
- The second indicator of gaming addiction is heightened aggression and irritability — sudden fits of anger when someone tries to interrupt a teen’s play.
- The third sign is disrupted sleep: playing late into the night and chronically missing out on restorative rest.
- In addition, emotional swings may occur: bouts of unprovoked euphoria during play, followed by steep drops in mood after losses that can resemble depressive episodes.
- Isaev also pointed out a withdrawal syndrome: if access to a computer or device is limited, the adolescent may become anxious, angry, and unsettled.
The expert recommends avoiding pressure, bans, and accusations when these signs appear — such measures usually provoke resistance. Instead, he suggests establishing a clear set of rules and boundaries and offering alternative activities such as sports, in-person socializing, or creative pursuits. In some cases, consulting an appropriate specialist may be necessary.
