The reveal of Horizon: Steel Frontiers has stirred strong reactions. Many had anticipated a major new entry for PS5, yet the Horizon-set MMORPG is slated only for PC and mobile — an unexpected direction for a franchise long tied to PlayStation.
Guerrilla Games sought to calm fans with an official statement. The studio said it “enjoyed working with NCSoft” and is “excited by the prospect of cooperative machine hunting in the Horizon universe,” while noting it is exploring new ways to expand the world.
Reporter Jason Schreier confirmed that Guerrilla itself is developing Horizon Online. He clarified that the MMO recently announced from NCSoft is a separate project and should not be confused with Guerrilla’s own multiplayer title — Horizon Online is a distinct, large-scale game from the studio.
This outcome will disappoint many in the community, who were hoping for another single-player journey with Aloy. Sony seems to be shifting focus toward online experiences: insiders report that before Guerrilla returns to a full single-player installment, two multiplayer titles — Horizon: Steel Frontiers and Horizon Online — will be released first. Horizon 3 is reportedly still in early development and may not arrive until 2027, possibly as a transitional release between the PS5 and PS6. A new solo adventure starring Aloy could be a long time coming.
