Hollywood Developing a Remake of Serendipity
The beloved romantic comedy Serendipity is set for a modern reimagining, as reported by Deadline. Amazon MGM Studios and Miramax have partnered to develop a fresh take on the 2001 original.
Michael Showalter, known for his work on The Idea of You and The Big Sick, is attached to direct. Casting for the lead roles is currently underway, while Marc Klein, who penned the original screenplay, has been tapped to adapt the script.
The original film centered on two strangers, Jonathan (John Cusack) and Sara (Kate Beckinsale), who share a chance encounter during the Christmas season only to be separated by fate. Seven years later, as both prepare to marry other partners, they find themselves drawn back to one another, embarking on a quest to reunite.
Garnering $77 million at the global box office, the movie cemented its status as a quintessential romantic comedy. Specific plot details for the upcoming iteration remain under wraps. Notably, NBC previously attempted to develop a television series based on the property in 2019, though that project ultimately stalled.
