Helldivers 2 Is a Hit on Xbox — What Does That Mean for PlayStation?
Helldivers 2 has emerged as a major success on Xbox. According to NPD Group analyst Mat Piscatella, the title was the third highest-grossing game on Xbox in August and slipped to fourth in September. Those rankings are based on revenue, even though Helldivers 2 isn’t a full-scale AAA release.
Across all platforms the game placed sixth in sales for September and climbed to 19th for the year, despite initially launching in 2024. That suggests the Xbox release extended the title’s lifecycle and boosted microtransaction revenue — precisely the outcome Sony has long pursued with its live-service offerings.
Now many are asking whether Sony will continue to bring more of its products to Xbox. It’s already confirmed that Bungie’s Marathon will launch simultaneously on all platforms, and other projects — such as Marvel Tōkon: Fighting Souls or Fairgames — could see similar cross-platform treatment in the future.
If Helldivers 2 was indeed a test, its success might mark a turning point for PlayStation, where exclusivity becomes less of a limitation and more of a deliberate strategic choice.
