The Game of Thrones universe has successfully evolved from a standalone television phenomenon into a sprawling multimedia franchise. While House of the Dragon restored faith in George R.R. Martin’s fantasy epic following a divisive series finale, and A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms demonstrated the power of more intimate, character-driven narratives, the horizon is expanding even further. Westeros appears to be heading for the silver screen, and the latest reports suggest that the project has secured a screenwriter uniquely suited to the task.

According to reports from Page Six and Variety, Beau Willimon—the acclaimed mind behind House of Cards and a standout contributor to Andor—has submitted a screenplay to Warner Bros. for a Game of Thrones prequel film. While specific plot points remain under wraps, the narrative is expected to center on Aegon the Conqueror’s bloody unification of the Seven Kingdoms. This pivotal era occurs roughly three centuries before the original series, fitting earlier descriptions of a “mammoth, Dune-sized” cinematic feature exploring the Targaryen ascent.

Willimon’s involvement is particularly promising for fans of grounded, high-stakes storytelling. He was responsible for some of the most harrowing and sophisticated segments of Disney’s Andor, most notably the Narkina 5 prison arc. His writing excels at depicting the suffocating weight of authoritarian regimes and the desperate struggle of individuals caught in the machinery of power. Whether detailing a dystopian prison break or a planetary massacre, Willimon has a gift for portraying how empires crush the common man—and how the common man eventually breaks back.

Applying this gritty, “boots-on-the-ground” perspective to Aegon’s Conquest offers a fascinating alternative to standard fantasy tropes. While the story could easily focus on the majesty of dragons and the glory of the Targaryen crown, Willimon’s track record suggests a more visceral exploration of imperial conquest. By viewing these historic events through the eyes of the smallfolk rather than just the high lords in their towers, the film could offer a profound look at the human cost of fire and blood.

As A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms has already proven, this franchise flourishes when it steps away from the Iron Throne to focus on the world below. If Willimon can successfully blend that intimate sensibility with the sheer scale of a theatrical blockbuster, the Game of Thrones movie could redefine the genre once again.
