Guy Ritchie’s Action Thriller The Covenant Is Streaming

Guy Ritchie has spent decades directing crime capers, spy thrillers, and big-budget franchises. In 2023, the director released a military drama that broke sharply from his signature style. After a quiet run in theaters, Guy Ritchie’s The Covenant is finding a broader audience through its run on Hulu.

The film stars Jake Gyllenhaal as Sergeant John Kinley, an American soldier serving in Afghanistan. Inspired by real events, the narrative centers on the local interpreters who assisted United States military personnel. Dar Salim plays Ahmed Abdullah, a defected Taliban fighter who works as an interpreter for Kinley’s squad.

Their dynamic begins as a professional arrangement until the Taliban ambushes the patrol. Ahmed risks his life to rescue Kinley, carrying him across hostile terrain. After recovering in the United States, Kinley discovers that Ahmed and his family are in hiding from the Taliban, prompting him to return to Afghanistan to extract them.

Guy Ritchie’s The Covenant puts character first

Viewers expecting Ritchie’s typical fast-talking British gangsters or the stylized action of Sherlock Holmes will notice a very different approach. Instead of rapid banter or intricate visual tricks, the production delivers a direct, grounded story centered on the bond between two men. The plot emphasizes the personal obligation one person feels toward another rather than leaning on standard invincible-soldier tropes.

Gyllenhaal brings intense focus to the role of Kinley, echoing performances from earlier projects like Donnie Darko, Nightcrawler, and Spider-Man: Far From Home. Salim matches him step for step, giving Ahmed quiet resolve and emotional weight.

The production remains far more disciplined than Ritchie’s typical action fare. While the film features shootouts, ambushes, and tactical sequences, it avoids wink-to-the-camera humor and flashy edits. By allowing the relationship between Kinley and Ahmed to anchor the narrative, the film earned a 98 percent audience score on Rotten Tomatoes.

Hulu now gives viewers an opportunity to revisit a wartime drama that was overlooked during its initial theatrical run. It stands out in Ritchie’s career by paring down his usual habits to focus entirely on human stakes.
