Lawyers have raised concerns about yet another mod.
A well-known fan project closely tied to the Grand Theft Auto franchise has recently come under scrutiny.
The Multi Theft Auto (MTA) repository received a DMCA takedown notice and was disabled; a notification appeared on the page:
This repository is currently disabled due to a DMCA takedown notice.
Fans speculate that this could be connected to the use of original source code:
By the way — there were reports that, early in the multiplayer’s development, Rockstar themselves provided the MTA developers with portions of the game’s source code to speed up development, since they supported the creation of such a project […].
This isn’t the first time Take-Two / Rockstar Games’ lawyers have issued DMCA notices against fan projects. It’s unclear why the notice arrived only now — MTA has been around for more than 20 years.
